Resizing the Root Disk on an AWS EC2 EBS backed Instance
Resizing the Root Disk on an AWS EC2 EBS backed Instance
Have you ever wanted to have a larger root EBS volume on an EC2 Ubuntu instance? With these steps its easily accomplished with minimal down time. (Some of these steps were gleaned from this post at alestic.com.)
Im setting up a new "base" image for some servers Im starting in Amazons us-west-1 region. I started with a Ubuntu image built by RightScale, then did some basic setup to customize the image. Now I need to increase the root EBS volume a bit. Then I can use this as my own base image for starting new Linux servers.
Note: I use a combination of tools to manage my EC2 instances and EBS volumes, from Amazon Management Console, to command line tools, to ElasticFox. Often the tool I use depends on the way the wind is blowing on a particular day. For this post Im using the Amazon Management Console. For info on the command line tools see the previously mentioned post. Finally, one critical step cannot be completed using ElasticFox.
First, my volume is only the default size of 10GB (I used df -lah to display the volume size in GB), but I need it to be a little bigger:

The next step is to create a snapshot of the volume. This can be done a few different ways. Using various tools (command line tools, Elasticfox, EC2 Management Console, etc.) a snapshot of the volume could be created. Or, (my preferred method) is to create an AMI of the instance which creates a snapshot of the volume, and gives me a an AMI from which I can launch other, similar instances. FYI creating an AMI creates a snapshot of the volume.

Once the AMI and/or snapshot is complete create a new volume of the size you desire from the snapshot, which has to be in the same availability zone as the instance. My instance is in us-west-1a so Ill create my new volume will be in that AZ. In the AWS Console select Snapshots under Elastic Block Store, right-click the volumes snapshot and select Create Volume from Snapshot.

After connecting to your instance with its new volume if you run df it will report the original volume size, not the new size. So, the final step is to run sudo resize2fs /dev/sda1 in Ubuntu. Once this is complete you can run df to see the new, increased size of your volume.

The last thing would be to delete the volume you detached from this instance. Oh, and perhaps to make a new AMI.
Now, not only do you have a larger EBS volume on this instance, future instances made from (your new) AMI of this instance will have the same size volume.

Register Global On dan Off
Register Global On dan Off
Sambil melihat-lihat perkembangan buku-buku lokal.
Sebenarnya, apa perbedaan dari nilai On dan Off?
if(isset($submit)) {
echo $tes;
}
?>
<html>
<head>
<title>Register Global</title>
</head>
<body>
<form name="frm1" method="post">
<input type="text" name="tes" />
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Kirim"
/>
</form>
</body>
</html>
if(isset($_POST[submit])) {
echo $_POST[tes];
}
?>
<html>
<head>
<title>Register Global</title>
</head>
<body>
<form name="frm1" method="post">
<input type="text" name="tes" />
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Kirim"
/>
</form>
</body>
</html>

Search Operation on Android online Database JSON
Search Operation on Android online Database JSON
For the database setup, please refer to http://blog.kerul.net/2014/04/insert-new-record-on-android-online.html
INTRODUCTION
This tutorial will demonstrate how to retrieve an records form an online database. We are using the JSON data format to transfer the database content to the Android client.
STEP 1: JSON DATA FORMAT GENERATOR (server-side)
Overview illustration (click to enlarge)
In order to fetch records form the database, we will use the JSON data format generator using the PHP script. Add this file named search.php to the existing folder in the idiomjson folder, in htdocs. (Refer STEP 1 of this article http://blog.kerul.net/2014/04/insert-new-record-on-android-online.html)
search.php
<?php
//search.php
/*
* Following code will search idiom based on keywords
*/
// array for JSON response
$response = array();
// include connect class
require_once __DIR__ . /connect.php;
// connecting to db
$db = new DB_CONNECT();
$keyword=$_GET["keyword"];
// get idioms based on keyword
/*
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM a_senarai_e WHERE " .
"MATCH(entri) AGAINST ($keyword ".
"IN NATURAL LANGUAGE MODE)") or die(mysql_error());
*/
//using LIKE
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM idiomlist WHERE entry LIKE %$keyword% LIMIT 0, 20")
or die(mysql_error());
// check for empty result
if (mysql_num_rows($result) > 0) {
// looping through all results
$response["idioms"] = array();
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
// temp user array
$idioms= array();
$idioms["id"] = $row["id"];
$idioms["entry"] = $row["entry"];
$idioms["meaning"] = $row["meaning"];
// push single idiom array into final response array
array_push($response["idioms"], $idioms);
}
// success
$response["success"] = 1;
// echoing JSON response
echo json_encode($response);
} else {
// no products found
$response["success"] = 0;
$response["message"] = "No idioms found";
// echo no users JSON
echo json_encode($response);
}
?>
When the page is called directly from the browser, this is the JSON formatted data you will see.
http://172.16.16.183/idiomjson/search.php?keyword=baik%20budi
{"idioms":[
{"id":"106",
"entry":"Baik budi ",
"meaning":"Bersikap baik dan penyayang (suka menolong). "},
{"id":"3401",
"entry":"Yang merah saga, yang kurik kundi, yang indah bahasa, yang baik budi. ",
"meaning":"Rupa yang elok sahaja, tidak disertakan budi bahasa akan tetap menjadi hina di kalangan masyarakat. "}
],"success":1}
STEP 2: CREATE A NEW PROJECT IN ECLIPSE-ADT (Android client-side)
The UI consist of an EditText with id txtkeyword, and a Button id btnsearch.
This is the UI XML file
<RelativeLayout >="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
>="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="@dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="@dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="@dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="@dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context=".Search" >
<TableLayout
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:layout_alignParentRight="true"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" >
<TableRow
android:id="@+id/tableRow1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<TextView
android:id="@+id/textView1"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="Search for Idiom"
android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceLarge" />
</TableRow>
<TableRow
android:id="@+id/tableRow2"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<EditText
android:id="@+id/txtkeyword"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:ems="10" >
<requestFocus />
</EditText>
</TableRow>
<TableRow
android:id="@+id/tableRow3"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
<Button
android:id="@+id/btnsearch"
android:layout_width="0dp"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_weight="1"
android:text="Search" />
</TableRow>
<TableRow
android:id="@+id/tableRow4"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content" >
</TableRow>
</TableLayout>
</RelativeLayout>
Search.java
This is only has the UI of the keyword entry. It will be calling another page/screen which will list the idioms that match the search keyword.
package net.kerul.searchjson;//change this to ur package name
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.content.Intent;
import android.view.Menu;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.EditText;
public class Search extends Activity implements OnClickListener {
private EditText txtkeyword;
private Button btnsearch;
@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.activity_search);
//link to UI
txtkeyword=(EditText)findViewById(R.id.txtkeyword);
btnsearch=(Button)findViewById(R.id.btnsearch);
btnsearch.setOnClickListener(this);
}
@Override
public void onClick(View v) {
if(v.getId()==R.id.btnsearch){
Intent searchIntent = new Intent(this, Search.class);
//send the keyword to the next screen
searchIntent.putExtra("key",txtkeyword.getText().toString());
//call the screen for listing
startActivity(searchIntent);
}
}
@Override
public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
// Inflate the menu; this adds items to the action bar if it is present.
getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.search, menu);
return true;
}
}
Create the ListView named ListResult activity to handle the result listing.
To create a new activity, right click on project and choose New > Other
Use the name ListResult for the new activity.
inside this UI XML file copy paste the following XML code. It must have ListView with the id named list.
activity_list_result.xml
<RelativeLayout >="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
>="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:paddingBottom="@dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
android:paddingLeft="@dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingRight="@dimen/activity_horizontal_margin"
android:paddingTop="@dimen/activity_vertical_margin"
tools:context=".ListResult" >
<!-- Main ListView
Always give id value as list(@android:id/list)
-->
<ListView
android:id="@android:id/list"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"/>
</RelativeLayout>
Then add another XML file in the layout folder, by right clicking on the layout folder->New->Android XML File. This is to show the record. It will be reiterated for all records successfully fetched. It must be named list_view.xml; it will be called by activity_list_result.xml to populate the idiom data.
list_view.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout >="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"

Running On Empty 7 Tools To Heal Emotional Exhaustion
Running On Empty 7 Tools To Heal Emotional Exhaustion
![]() |
| We think that the point is to pass the test or overcome the problem, but the truth is that things dont really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. Its just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy. ~ Pema Chödrön |
The statement above is a common thread among those who are emotionally spent.
And the number of people who suffer from this is escalating at an alarming rate.
This kind of tired is what happens when emotional trauma gets the upper hand.
Emotional trauma is so disempowering that it causes physical symptoms. And no amount of stimulants will help. In fact, solutions like coffee, tea (even green), alcohol or cannabis only deplete the bodyspecifically the adrenal glands, creating a vicious cycle of ups and downs. Besides, all those things only mask the problem. In the case of cannabis, which is used to alleviate stress in controlled doses, the sufferer can find escape but not resolution. Im not against cannabis for the purposes of gaining relief from stress (for some it is a true life-saver); but in excess it can deprive us of our motivation and compromise our self-awareness.
From my own experience and from conversations with others who have at one time or still suffer silently, I have seen how important it is to address this issue.
A few years back, I was having a heart to heart with my partner about emotional exhaustion and gave him a visual: I likened myself to a container that every year was being filled with layers of trauma. This came right after the death of my adoptive mother.
Moving, death and divorce are supposedly the biggest causes of stress. My layers (too many to list them all here) contained all three beginning with the death of my parents at age six and then being adopted to a family in Canada where I suffered emotional, physical and sexual abuse for ten years and at least forty moves in my life. My layers culminated the day my adoptive mother passed away, we received news that an infant we wished to adopt was going to another family, and we had to put our beloved dog down. Talk about having a lot to process!
My only reason for listing these events is as an example for others to relate to. Sometimes we go through things without realizing that they are indeed trauma until someone else speaks of it.
Between all those times were also many, many moments of incredible beauty that I am truly grateful for. If I were to list those wed run out of paper. I dont consider my life a disaster in any way.
And yet, around the time of my mothers death, I felt a shutting down of reserves. I was incapable of any more bullsh*t. It was quite sudden, actually. One day I woke up and realized that one more thing and I would crack. I wanted to sleep. All day. Every day. All thoughts of any future challenges seemed insurmountable.
I literally had no more room inside me. The container was full and overflowing.
Tests with a homeopath revealed what I already knew as a trained holistic nutritionist: My adrenal glands, responsible for fight or flight, were completely depleted. I was at a physical low and had a rapidly dwindling supply of self-confidence.
Normally I am the eternal optimist. But in those days, the smallest suggestion of a problem was enough to reduce me to tears and fill me with an overwhelming desire to run. I had no fight left at all.
For a feisty, resourceful, determined Scorpio, this was shocking. I had always been in control, always smiling, could always be counted on. Now, I wanted to draw the curtains and fade away into nothingness.
I had the good fortune to run away to Kauai for a month long respite with my eldest daughter. I cried every day of my stay in paradise. My youngest joined us for a spell. I considered divorce. I considered how I could stay in Kauai. I thought that when I got home I would need to live on my own for awhile to pull myself together. I was blessed to have the presence of mind to know that changes needed to be made. As always, my Scorpio nature tended toward finding my own solutions. I drew inward.
Part of what I was facing was the natural urge of a menopausal woman to hermit. These are the wisdom years when we crave time alone. I spent time seriously thinking about how my beloved partner and I could separate so I could heal. He agreed to the plan as long as we could maintain our love at a distance. That kind of support was incredibly helpful. I know that he was hurting, but he put me first.
Fifty years of climbing proverbial mountains and I was too tied to make any sense. No matter how I turned things over in my head, the future seemed bleak. I wondered if I would ever feel whole again. To the outside world, I was doing okay. Im always in forward movement mode. But my inner landscape screamed for the storm to end.
Fortunately, I had enough tools at my disposal to dig my way out. Perhaps they will be helpful to you as well. There is no one recipe for healing from any one situation, but we can learn from each others journeys nonetheless.
These tools were not unfamiliar to me; I had used them frequently to survive and grow emotionally. Now I turned to them like old friends, ready to engage in their healing magic.
A miracle happened that offered me a spark of hope. My partner found healing from his debilitating concussion symptoms through alternative medicine. There were serendipitous events that led to this, and they followed a meditation and prayer time at the foot of Bali Hai, a mountain sacred to the Hawaiians. The spirits had promised that if I did my part, the Universe would conspire with me.
I had to do my part.
Heres what I did to find peace and healing:
The Decision
I believe that a decision is the first step on any journey. I decided that I wanted to be whole and to shed the layers of crap that were holding me down. I envisioned a phoenix. I cast a spell for release from emotional pain.
This may sound very simplistic but, without the decision, when difficult days came, I would have had nothing to go back to for supporting my effort. If youre thinking you can skip this step, dont. Decide that youre worth it. Decide that you are ready. Decide what you want the rest of your life to be.
Detox
I purged. First my belongings. Then toxic relationships and any drama. And always I purged emotions into a journal which I later offered up to the fire.
My body responded with weight loss. My soul responded with room in that container! Lots of room.
The tears were still pouring. It was good.
The Power of Now
I re-read Eckharte Tolles The Power of Now. This moment was all that mattered. Everything I had gone through was a story that I no longer needed to recite or identify with. I went on to the other books on my shelf:
The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho
A New Earth, Eckharte Tolle
You Are a Spiritual Being Having a Human Experience, Bob Frissell
The Laws of Spirit, Dan Millman
Everyday Miracles, David Spangler
Courage, Osho
Peace is the Way, Deepak Chopra and many more.
I fed my mind and my spirit soared.
Exercise/Yoga/Healthy Food
I walked my ass off. Walking meditation is incredibly healing. My daughter eased me into the world of yoga, and my body and psyche responded with healing endorphins.
There is no substitute for treating oneself with care. Its an outward expression of how we feel on the inside.
This vehicle that houses my spirit is deserving of my respect and attention.
Creativity
This step was especially crucial for me. I need to create every day in order to stay alive. I dove into writing my first novel. Not, as one would assume, a cathartic biography. That had gone into that journal I burned.
No, this was a novel of erotica and mysticism. All that was healed and powerful spilled into a book I could share with the world. Of course, it is about me, but I let out what was beautiful (not perfect).
Please honor every creative urge you have while healing; it will take you leaps and bounds past the biggest hurdles.
Meditation
Meditation is something I would literally be dead without. Sinking into the great abyss is essential to heal mind chatter, to find a transcendental peace.
I found wisdom in silence. All the answers you will ever need are there. Bolstered by the Divine presence in silence, I found courage.
I met myself once more, the child, the young mother, the life partner, the incarnation I was meant to be.
Meditation is a discipline that opens doors to the mysterious and heals on a cellular level.
Gratitude
I practice gratitude every day. No. Every second. Without gratitude I would be lost to my wounds. I would be not only scarred but the wound would continue to bleed.
Gratitude offers perspective. It allows for grace under pressure. No matter how bad it seems, a few moments counting up the blessing side of the ledger is always healing.
Is there a difference between happiness and inner peace? Yes. Happiness depends on conditions being perceived as positive; inner peace does not.
~ Eckhart Tolle

Shubs shows up on South Park!
Shubs shows up on South Park!
A recent episode of South Park, Coon 2 : Hindsight, includes a segment in which Cthulhu and associated Elder Gods are released upon the world when oil company DP accidentally drills into another dimension. I judge this as blogworthy for two reasons:
1. Cthulhus in it.
2. There appears to be some cross-dimensional connection between the creators and me. Or at least thats the conclusion Im inclined to draw having noticed the similarity between the head of this eldritch horror from the show and my Shub-Niggurath artwork.
