Shadows of the Dark Crystal

Deep within the remote swamplands of Sog, a young Gelfling woman called Naia encounters a mysterious silver-haired traveler who brings life-altering news from the All-Maudra. No longer bound to remain in her small village, Naia embarks on a journey to the Castle of the Crystal—the home of the Skeksis overlords who have accused her twin brother of treason.

Unwilling to accept these accusations, Naia hopes to learn the truth about her brother. However, the truths that she uncovers reveal something far greater than the fate of one Gelfling or even of the whole Gelfling race.

Something dark is spreading throughout Thra, and there are those who will do whatever it takes to ensure that its true nature remains hidden.

Im sure that one of these days Brian Froud is going to come swinging out his front door with a broom and chase me off his lawn. Until then, Im happy to say that over the last few years Ive had the very good fortune to work in an official capacity with Labyrinth and now The Dark Crystal.

SHADOWS OF THE DARK CRYSTAL is the first in a new series of novels from author J. M. Lee, publisher Grosset & Dunlap (an imprint of Penguin Random House) and The Jim Henson Co.

For this new series, Ive had the oppurtunity to create the interior illustrations. And hey, before I forget, Ill be doing a signed copy giveaway! See the end of the post for more information.

Cover art by Brian Froud

About the story itself, Lee has pulled off something amazing. Speaking as a big fan of the original film, hes not only nailed the tone and feel of this world but he (seemingly effortlessly) has smoothed out the edges of that world and documented, with a lot of heart, what he found beyond the walls of the movie. Its fresh, fun, and fast-paced. The story honors the original work while being completely its own new creation.

There are eight black and white interior illustrations in total and each one presented a special challenge. Heres a look at a couple of them and then below Ill walk through the steps, start to finish.

For many of these illustrations I put together several different thumbnails and compositions. This particular piece, though, was the unusual instance where I felt that I had immediately hit on the idea I wanted so I presented only two (admittedly pretty similar) ideas.

Thumbnail.

Digital rough painted over the initial thumbnail.

Brown pencil rough.

Finished drawing.

Watercolor sky. I knew that I wanted to persevere the original drawing so I did this separately and knit it together digitally.

Robo 3 Gears of Love by Herocraft Mobile

A robot’s reproduction is a very interesting but rather laborious process. You have to wrestle the problem of creation of a new cybernetic organism; it takes longer than the human average of two minutes! So our good friends Robo and Eny have decided to make a baby. Unfortunately they haven’t the suitable components handy: microchips cost a lot in shops and modern processors are lacking even on the black market. But Robo would do anything for a happy future for his cyber-child. That’s why he has to penetrate a frozen military laboratory. It is not easy to get there because its factories are located on a gigantic proving ground. This vast territory is full of abandoned machinery, deadly lasers and reflectors and dotted with portals and tunnels. There are few brave ones who’d dare even enter this zone, let alone pass through it from to the end.
Every level of the game is a maze full of different obstacles, traps and dangerous equipment. Upon passing 30 levels you can use the level editor and try to create your own levels or download the creations of other players.

Secrets of the Masters The Wu Sisters

So I can finally show some animation I did at on this short! This short was a real pleasure to work on, partly due to the generosity of Mr. Ken Duncan giving me a lot of control over these characters. I wasnt a lead but I kinda felt like one in terms of having ownership and a definite opinion about the characters. It was good casting for me. Plus I only focused on the Wu sisters, which was fine by me because before we started I wanted to do those characters anyway! Unfortunately in terms of the story the characters arent terrible textured or dimensional. But that left it up to us to try and add as much as we could with what we had to work with.

My general idea about them was to base them on ballet dancers. I had other acting ideas about them but there was really no where to put the ideas in the context of this story. The director wanted something slightly sexy as well, and being cats I could see how that would fit. But mostly I saw them as really graceful beings. But I wanted a flip side and stark contrast in that when they fought all of the sofistication and poise you once saw was gone and they became more primal. Theyre eyes changed to cat slit eyes and theyre general graphic shape changed as well.

These arent all of the shots I did but it is most of them. Quite a few of these got cut from the film unfortunately. I was slated to do a lot more acting but I got so front loaded with the action stuff that there was no way for me to get it all done in time. Fortunately the talented Mr. Jared Beckstrand did a lot of the acting shots as well as Mr. Ken Duncan.

Hope you enjoy these. It was a real pleasure to work on!

Secrets of Valhalla

Heres a book I illustrated the cover for last year. Getting the composition to work with all those branches was tricky, and I still not sure the hierarchy is as clear as it should be, though it looks pretty good with the title in there.
